A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friend,

In saying good-bye to 2019, we are delighted to share that we ended the year on a strong note, thanks to your support! As you and others in our community graciously donated time and resources to our organization, it positions us well to continue our important services and programs for members and families at no charge. This new year, we are confidently moving forward with our plans to expand and enhance 4 key program areas: child and family support, nutrition education, therapeutic music, and caregiver support.

Your gifts to the Wellness House are making a great difference for our members, as you'll see below. Your giving intentions also positively affect your own health and well-being! See the video link below for the science behind that. Stay tuned for news on more opportunities to make our corner of the world, our community, a better place!

Much love,

Mary Jermann
Executive Director
Wellness House of Annapolis

HOUSE NEWS
2020 is Off to an Amazing Start - Thanks to You!

During the year-end and holiday season, we were reminded of just how generous and supportive our community is. With your help, we were able to raise over $150,000 to kick-start a new year of life-changing support programs and services for community members and families affected by cancer.

Thanks to all who supported our Facebook Fundraisers, launched their own online fundraisers, gave on #GivingTuesday, joined us at The Caring Tree: Girls' Night Out, helped us meet the DeCesaris Matching Gift Campaign goals, and gave generously at the end of 2019 to help us make possible an even better 2020.

We look forward to the support Terri will bring to help grow Wellness House's programs and service offerings, and her hard work to help us keep our offerings free of charge to the community.

STORIES TO CELEBRATE
First "Wig Wednesday" a Hit

Our first ever "Wig-Wednesday" held on January 8th was a resounding success! This one of a kind day captured the positivity and empowerment we strive for every day at the House. Twenty-four survivors had a great afternoon with the talented Temple Annapolis: A Paul Mitchell Partner School team.

Thanks to EBeauty.com, every woman received a free wig custom cut by the Temple-Annapolis team, wig care products from Paul Mitchell Professional, eyebrow finessing tools from Ultimate Face, manicures, hand massages, and makeup tutorials too!

PROGRAM UPDATE
New Stress Reduction Course Meets High Demand

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), founded by renowned mindfulness guru Jon Kabat-Zinn, is a person-centered educational approach which uses training in mindfulness, meditation, and yoga as the core of a program to teach people how to take better care of themselves and live healthier and more adaptive lives.

We are proud to offer this for the first time at the Wellness House as a free 8 week course led by MBSR instructor Phebe Duff. The program includes half days of silent practice to empower members in how they meet the challenges of day-to-day life with cancer. Well received in its first round of registration (which closed after the first session), our activity room will be filled with almost 30 members each week.

PROGRAM UPDATE
'Writing Your Legacy' Workshop Captures Priceless Memories

Led by Sheryl Sieracki (long-time Wellness House volunteer, life story writer, and sole proprietor of Legacies of a Lifetime), this new 6-week workshop provides an intimate space for those who have lost a loved one to cancer within the last few years. Based on the guided autobiography method developed by James Birren & Kathryn Cochran, Sheryl guides a small group through reflections on important life themes, exploring their meanings, and sharing these stories in a supportive group setting.

This kind of self-reflection helps members think more deeply about how various aspects of their life histories have helped shape them into the individuals they have become.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
"When a member comes in and they're brand new, they're usually nervous - not really sure of what to expect. I try to put them at ease."
- Lois Villemaire, Wellness House Volunteer

Lois has supported the Wellness House week in and week out as a House Hostess volunteer for over 4 years now. Always making sure members are comfortable and cared for, and helping to keep our house running smoothly, she is a reliable friend to our team. Lois came to know the Wellness House following her sister's cancer diagnosis, and grew more involved following her husband's diagnosis as well. Lois knows first hand the caregiver's experience, and brings insights from this into her service to the community.

We couldn't meet the needs of our community without house hostesses like Lois - each with their own story of how they came to know the Wellness House. Next time you visit, be sure to thank them for all that they do!

WAYS TO SUPPORT WELLNESS HOUSE

Free isn't free, unfortunately!
3 ways you can help keep us going
:

Shop our Amazon Wishlist

Wig Wednesday reminded us that we need a new vacuum to tidy up after programs! Gift Wellness House a new acuum or other useful item on our Amazon Wishlist.

Employer Matching Gift Program

Many companies encourage employees to donate to their favorite charities by matching their contributions, sometimes dollar-for-dollar or more. Ask your employer if they offer this program.

If they do, when you make a donation to Wellness House make sure to request the matching gift from your employer, who then makes their own donation. Some employers even donate a dollar amount for each hour you volunteer!

Workplace Giving or Payroll Deduction

Payroll deductions are an easy and efficient way to make a tax-deductible donation to a nonprofit of your choice.

Ask your employer about enrolling in a monthly payroll deduction program - giving even $4 a month is $48 a year. Every bit helps!
