Dear Friend,

This spring has challenged our community and the entire planet in a much different way than ever before. At Wellness House of Annapolis, the question about staying open was met by our dedicated group of staff and volunteers, who were committed to transitioning our programs of care and support to an online platform. And the members responded. We are hosting over 80 members each week in our support groups, meditation and yoga sessions, educational seminars and more. This is quite an undertaking since the physical doors to our warm, welcoming house have been closed since mid-March.

As the saying goes, "... If you look closely beyond the challenge, you will see many people helping people." In this spirit of giving, we extend a very big thank-you to the Board of Directors’ gifts of their emotional and financial support with a tremendous offer of a match of $20,000 toward the Mid-year Appeal. And Now More Than Ever, we would like to extend gratitude and special wishes for a quick recovery for all businesses, especially our community partners, who have been with us through thick and thin.

Your gifts to the Wellness House are making a great difference. Read on to learn about the exciting happenings and several new programs and enhancements added while honoring social distancing. Stay tuned for news on more opportunities to make our corner of the world, our community, a better place!

Much love,

Mary Jermann
Executive Director
Wellness House of Annapolis

HOUSE NEWS & UPDATES

Since April, we have been averaging around 80 program participants each week.

Thanks to you, members have benefited from uninterrupted access to our yoga and meditation classes, and weekly check-in/social gatherings online. Additionally, all of our ongoing survivorship, caregiver, and child/teen support groups, and continued counseling services have continued to provide important support during this difficult time. You keep us going strong!

#NowMoreThanEver with the United Way of Central Maryland

We partnered with the United Way of Central Maryland on International Women's Day to share stories of women coming together to face cancer in our community. This impactful forum is captured in our #NowMoreThanEver campaign. See our weekly videos here, and please continue to like, repost, and share our messages with your community.

Important #NowMoreThanEver Campaign Update

We're excited that our Board of Directors and Executive Director, Mary Jermann, will be matching $20,000 raised towards our campaign! This means that gifts we receive during the month of May will go twice as far - and we're on our way there at over $15,000! See our progress thermometer here and ways to help us reach our goal.

Celebrating Grant Awards

As you know, Wellness House relies on the generous support that comes from individual giving and fundraising events, as well as support from grants. With gratitude, we are pleased to announce that we recently received a grant from the William J & Dorothy K O'Neill Foundation!

Have you heard about our new blog?

So many incredible things happen behind the scenes at the Wellness House that we don't get to share with you. So we started our Voices from the House blog to do just that! Read positive stories and inspiring updates shared by our team and volunteers. ADULT PROGRAM UPDATES

Educational Seminars Continue to Address
Critical Needs

In moving our seminars online, we thank the following presenters for their time:

  • Lyndsey Griffin, LCSW-C (Patient Navigator at Anne Arundel Medical Center), who lead our Finding Financial Help round-table and Q&A discussion of resources available to help with the financial challenges of life with cancer.
  • Patti McMillan (Director of Medical Practice Management at Hospice of the Chesapeake) who lead our Understanding the Difference Between Supportive (Palliative) Care and Hospice Care seminar with resources for members.
  • Alexandra Hill, PT (Physical Therapist and pelvic floor specialist at Anne Arundel Medical Center), who lead our Returning to Intimacy for Women seminar, supporting members navigating the challenges around sexual health and body image after cancer treatment.

These seminars provided professional insights, tools, and resources for our members to help on their journeys through cancer survivorship. We are fortunate to have the support of our professional connections.

Coming soon, is our Creating Your Healing Music Playlist with Certified Therapeutic Musician Terri Fevang, who will teach how certain music affects the mind, body and spirit, and help members create a playlist to help manage some of the side effects of dealing with serious illness.

Wellness & Support Offerings Continue to Grow

Our incredibly generous team of volunteers and staff are adeptly adapting our online programs to this "new normal" of socially distant support:

  • Our Living with Cancer and Drop-In Cancer Loss Bereavement Support Groups now meet weekly thanks to licensed counselors Virginia Ricketts and Sally Sellman.
  • Piloted earlier this spring, our Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program has been adapted to a weekly meditation and discussion with instructor Phebe Duff.
  • Tea Time at (Y)Our House and newly added in April Care to Share weekly gatherings provide much needed spaces for connection and friendship for members old and new during this difficult time.
  • Yoga instructors Terry Conroy, Stacee Johnson, and Julia Simmons keep our yoga classes going strong, while Dawn Schulman and Christalene Karaikakis continue our therapeutic art offerings with Zentangle®, Meditative Art and Therapeutic Art classes (respectively).

CHILD & FAMILY PROGRAM UPDATES

Our child and family programs have been an excellent space for kids, teens, and parents to develop coping tools that work for them individually, and together as a family.

April's Kidz Coping and My Viewpoint (formerly Teen Viewpoints) groups guided parents in working with their children to articulate what resilience - "the capacity or ability to recover quickly from difficult situations in life" - means, and to have a healthy conversation on what that looks like for their family. For May's Follow Your Rainbow online gathering, families built birdhouses kindly delivered by Betsy and Paula! We even hosted a special bonus gathering for Mother's Day, where child members showcased their artistic talents for their moms.

These fun and engaging activities are a helpful emotional outlet as families juggle homeschooling with the stresses of living with cancer and the coronavirus pandemic. As we continue to adapt our child and family programs, we look forward to sharing our plans for our summer activities. Stay tuned!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU at this time! We are grateful for all who have given their support making our quality offerings to the community possible. Especially:
